Courses
Royal North Devon
Royal North Devon was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris and subsequently revised by Herbert Fowler, and is a quintessential seaside course. That is, its character is totally dependent upon the land. From the traditional clubhouse, the view of the course is an array of dunes and brambles, with little to suggest a championship standard golf course. However the reality is much different, as Royal North Devon is a gem; any good tour of the fantastic golfing landscape of Devon should certainly include a stop at the remarkable Westward Ho!
Saunton East
Herbert Fowler's East Course is ranked just outside England's top ten, and at 6,700 yards it provides a stern test to even the most skilled golfers. The rugged sand dunes of Braunton Burrows are the setting for this fine golfing destination, a site that has been designated as being of international importance by UNESCO. The real challenge of the East comes in the shape of the tough par-4s, eight of which measure over 400 yards, while the charm of the course is accentuated by the feeling that every hole is cut distinctly through the dunes.
Saunton West
The West Course was originally opened in the 1930s, but was used as a training field during the Second World War and subsequently lay dormant for some 40 years until the esteemed Frank Pennink revived it in 1975. The West may be shorter than the more prestigious East Course, but it remains a considerable test, with a network of burns and streams interspersed through the dunes. Both courses are reputed to boast some of the finest putting surfaces in England, and together they represent a truly terrific links golf destination.
Ilfracombe
lfracombe Golf Club is situated one mile east of Ilfracombe towards Combe Martin on the magnificent North Devon coastline and offers spectacular views along the coast and across the Bristol Channel to South Wales. The golf course is well maintained throughout the year and although not the longest, the undulations and prevailing South Westerlies will still offer a challenge to golfers of all abilities. Don't be put off by the hills though - a number of buggies are available from the Pro Shop, enabling you to play in comfort and style.
Portmore
Portmore is the latest golf course to be built in the area and offers a pleasant round of golf. The Barum course is a Parkland golf course and has a par of 71. This 6289 yard golf course has been designed for all abilities and to make you strategically plan your way around. The course has a lot of shape and character and has some of the best views of the area.
Tiverton
This stunning 18 hole course was originally designed by famous course architect James Braid whose other designs include Gleneagles, Carnoustie and St Enodoc. Regarded as one of Devon's finest parkland courses, the tree-lined fairways demand accuracy from the tee whilst the smooth greens reward the skilled putter. The course offers panoramic views of the Devon countryside from several spots, with the 3rd hole running alongside the Grand Western Canal. Getting out on to the course is never a problem with both the 1st and 10th tees easily accessible from the Clubhouse.
