Overview
The City of Plymouth is a beautiful, vibrant and historic city located on the Devon & Cornwall border, the perfect location to explore the many areas of outstanding natural beauty including the delights of Dartmoor and the surrounding magnificent coast. Plymouth has been going through a resurgence over recent years with much investment into the city including new up market areas to wine and dine so if it is good nightlife you are after, Plymouth ticks this box too with its choice of many fine restaurants, lively bars and live music scene. Overall there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained away from the fairways!
Championship parkland courses St.Mellion and China Fleet and Moorland Links course Yelverton allow you to experience something different each day you play. Accommodation is provided at the New Continental Hotel located in the heart of the City Centre. The Golf can be tailored to your requirements so if you require another course we can add this to your itinerary.
Courses
Yelverton
Yelverton Golf Club lies just north of Plymouth off the A386 south of Yelverton itself. A delightful and challenging moorland course, designed by Herbert Fowler, who used the old mine workings as natural hazards to challenge golfers of all standards. It has outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall and is a very natural course, with Dartmoor ponies and cattle sharing the fairways. The course has played host to many top competitions, including many county Championships.
China Fleet
China Fleet Country Club is a superb 18 hole, parkland golf course designed by Dr Martin Grant Hawtree, located amongst 180 acres of beautiful Cornish Countryside along the River Tamar. At 6551 yards, the course is fairly long compared to some other courses in the county, and as it is situated right on the banks of the River Tamar there are some interesting holes that stay in the memory. It is quite tight, with several holes requiring accurate tee shots to hit the lush fairways. The 14th & 16th holes across water are quite a test of nerve from the tee. China Fleet has played host to the EuroPro tour in the past, which is a testimony to the quality of the layout..
St Mellion
The Nicklaus Course
Opened for play in 1988 The Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is amongst the finest golf courses in Europe and certainly one of the most famous. The course was also the first European course personally designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course opended to rave reviews with Nicklaus himself being quoted "I knew it was going to be good but not this good". It was certainly good enough to host the Benson & Hedges International Open for six years from 1990 until 1995 with Olazabal, Langer and Ballesteros amongst the winners.
The Kernow Course
Opened in 1976 The Old Course, as it was then called, quickly became a must play course and by 1979 was included amongst the elite by its inclusion on the European Tour with the hosting of the Benson & Hedges International Open. This was followed by two further tournaments as it played host to the Tournament Players Championship, which included a win for Bernhard Langer in 1983. Entirely renovated as part of St Mellion’s extensive 2008 redevelopment, the Kernow Course has developed into a very popular golf course with Members & Visitors alike and a perfect foil for the world class Nicklaus Course. With it's wide fairways and big greens the course has gained a popular following and in a recent survey was included in the Top 5 "2nd Courses" in the UK’s best 36-hole golf courses.
