Overview
The Historic West Devon market Town of Tavistock is the ideal location to explore the great golf on offer across Dartmoor. This Golf Package is perfect for small groups and couples looking to play great golf alongside high quality hospitality. Tavistock is a busy market town offering an vast range of excellent restaurants, bars and shopping and if you are looking to take a few days off your golf there are plenty of places of local interest to visit too. Accommodation is provided at The Bedford Hotel Hotel, located in the heart of the Town. The Golf is played over a choice of excellent courses located within easy access of Tavistock including the well renowned Bovey Castle and the nearby Tavistock and Yelverton, both regular host venues for the County Championship.
Courses
Bovey Castle
The golf course at Bovey Castle is a challenging and beautiful 18-hole championship course, designed in 1926 by J F Abercromby, one of the finest British golf course designers of the last century. When the course opened in 1930, it quickly gained national acclaim for its reputation as one of the most enjoyable places to play golf. Designed to rival its sister courses at Gleneagles and Turnberry, this course has been described as an experience of golf never to be forgotten, presenting the pure challenge of golf to professional and amateur alike. The course meanders through the hotel estate, surrounded by idyllic landscape and challenges to meet any handicap.
Tavistock
Tavistock Golf Club, situated on the western slopes of the Dartmoor National Park, an area of outstanding beauty. The golf course was established in 1890 and with continual updating and maintenance to the highest standards it offers a challenging test to golfers of all abilities. With its wide fairways and sweeping vistas the course looks deceptively simply but its offers a challenging test for the unwary golfer. Nature has provided its own hazards at Tavistock, with thick gorse and bracken, plus the odd clump of scrubby trees. There are also cunningly hidden bunkers that can trap the most proficient golfer. The thin soil not only provides tight lies, it also makes the greens lightning fast. Because of the thin soil the course and greens drain very quickly allowing year-long play.
Yelverton
Yelverton Golf Club lies just north of Plymouth off the A386 south of Yelverton itself. A delightful and challenging moorland course, designed by Herbert Fowler, who used the old mine workings as natural hazards to challenge golfers of all standards. It has outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall and is a very natural course, with Dartmoor ponies and cattle sharing the fairways. The course has played host to many top competitions, including many county Championships.
